Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry Review

Last year when I was browsing in Asda, which I do very regularly, i found Excuse me while I ugly cry sat on the shelf. I was intrigued. A YA romance is right up my alley and Excuse me while I ugly cry did not disappoint. I read it In 2 days. It got me out of my reading slump.

The book follows Quinn, a black American who is about graduate from high school. She is a shy girl who writes lists in her journal to open up about her thoughts and feelings without having to talk to people. When working on a project together, Carter accidentally takes her beloved journal instead of his. It then gets taken from Carter in class. Quinn then gets blackmailed to complete her list - which included telling her family she didn’t get into Clombia.

By completing her lists, she realises how much she was hiding behind these lists and there were more to life then she realise. She discovers more about herself and the group of people that does on the quest.

The book, overall, was amazing. I enjoyed it cover to cover. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters, Epecially Olivia. She was badass and very understanding towards Quinn. Everyone deserves a friend like her.

The Character Matt needed more development. At the beginning, I was expecting him to be a bigger part of the story. However, It went no where. I expected him to find out about Quinn thinking she was in love with him and he would admit to being in love with her. He was a part of Quinn’s story but wasn’t at the end. At the end, there wasn’t much interaction after Quinn and Carter got together. I was expecting a triangle to happen. Although I do think the book wouldn’t be as good as it was. I just wanted closure with Matt and Quinn.

The book included many important conversation like racism, the expectations of parents and friends. It captures all the characters essence perfectly.

Overall, I would recommend it to anyone who loves YA!
